Art & Projects
This page shows pieces of art that I have done in my own time while learning how to use new techniques with Adobe software, Design art for Clients and practicing code.
House Of Barber
House of Barber was at the time, and is currently still the best rated Barber shop in Christchurch. During the time the owner was still developing a feel for the establishment and had asked me and a friend to design some posters for him.
He asked for the posters to be eye catching and interesting to look as he wanted his customers to have some visual stimulation while getting their hair cut because he only had bear walls.
I took some photo’s of the decor and interior design of the Barber shop to capture the feel of the place. The owner only ask that the color purple was used and that it was sports related and gave us complete creative freedom with everything else.
Inspiration
First Poster
Using illustrator I drew many things with literal meaning and some metaphorical. The gloves for example are a clear symbol of boxing whereas the heart beating can be seen as a high a symbol of courage or represent a time of great effort, while the the butterflies are an inspiration of Muhammad’s quote, and the wavy lines are inspired by Mike Tyson’s face tattoo.
Idea Generation
Poster Two
For the second piece I wanted something completely different and used the idea of a comic panel for a sort of short story. Still keeping to the request that it remain inclusive of barber shop and a form of sports I came up with the idea of motor sports.
Playing with the shape of hair clippers I saw they could resemble a motorcycle and proceeded to take some photos and turn them into vehicles
House of Barber’s owner had a fondness of boxing so that was the focus of my first idea. Using boxing cliche’s, themes and quotes like the “ float like a butterfly” quote from Muhammad Ali, I Illustrated multiple objects and made a sort of collage.
Finished Designs
On the left is the boxing design. All components put together to make a Rorschach image, where it mirrors itself and a client sitting in a chair looking in the mirror can see the poster behind them and will see the image reversed.
The second poster tells a short story of high speed races, with the House of Barber logo printed “sponsoring” the vehicle which is shaped like hair clippers.
Realistic Vector art
This piece of of art was done shortly after I was introduced to Illustrator. I wanted to challenge myself and see if I could make a hyper real image using only vectors.
The way I structured the hand was to draw the outline of each finger, then layer and add a mesh to be able to use gradients to render the skin.
Textures like hair follicles, hand lines and skin texture were made from gradually adding individually placed lines. While it was painstaking adding each line I had fun none the less and love the finished result.
Pokedex
This Project was a task from Yoobee. Use JavaScript to build a category system that filters characteristics. I decided to indulge in some nostalgia and build a 1st generation pokedex.
I had such fun making this that I took the project home and designed the layout and added all 150 Pokemon.
About The Dex
The Pokedex has three functions. by default it displays the Pokemon numerically from 1-150 and shows an element or elements, a picture and the name of a Pokemon on a card. You can search for Type (element), name or the location a Pokemon lives in.
Data is stored within a Json file the names, elements 1-2 and biome are stored as an array and found with JavaScript. Pokemon are found using a few functions that searches the Json file for the data, searching for a grass type for example the functions code looks for the array “GRASS” and if true applies a class within SCSS to display all the pokemon that have the “Grass” array.
